Alipay and WeChat Pay: set up before you fly

Verification status. Steps and rules below are verified against the toolkit and forum Q&A (2026-10-24). Field-test details pending: test date, city, shop location, package price, time taken. Nothing on this page invents those — they get filled in after a real walkthrough.

What this covers

Setting up Alipay and WeChat Pay with a foreign card, before you fly — so QR payment works from day one.

Alipay steps

  1. Download the international version from your home app store and register with your home mobile number — no Chinese number needed.
  2. Add your foreign card: Me → Bank Cards → Add. Visa, Mastercard and other major networks are accepted. Enter the name exactly as printed on your passport.
  3. Complete identity verification: upload your passport and complete the face check when prompted. This step can take 24–72 hours — which is why it belongs a week before departure, not on arrival day.

WeChat Pay steps

  1. Install WeChat and register with your home mobile number.
  2. Open Wallet and link a card: Me → Services → Wallet → Cards. Link the same foreign card as a second, independent payment rail.
  3. Verify with your passport. Real-name verification with a foreign passport is supported. Again, allow up to 72 hours.

Why both apps

Some merchants, street stalls and mini-programs only take one of the two. Two apps means no dead ends. Carry ¥300–500 in small notes as a bridge, and keep one physical card for hotel deposits — most hotels still pre-authorise a card at check-in.

Pitfalls

Where this does not apply

Merchant acceptance varies by city and shop; small vendors may be cash-only.
